Third Thursdays

On every third Thursday of the month, Hillyer is open for extended hours between 5 and 8 p.m. During this time, visitors can view our current exhibitions and/or participate in public programs and events. You can also enjoy Third Thursday at The Studio Gallery, The Phillips Collection, Washington Studio School, ADA Art Gallery, Heurich House, Vika Art Gallery, and The Korean Cultural Center.

A Digital Sound and Sonification Workshop with Tara Youngborg

 – 8:00 pm

Our featured solo artist, Tara Youngborg, will lead a digital sound workshop with a beginner-friendly coding language. In this workshop, you will be able to create a web page that can turn information from your computer or phone input into sounds, turning your device and the information it collects from your inputs into an instrument! Participants will need to bring a laptop, phone, or other device that can access the internet. Hillyer will provide Wifi access, if needed. Headphones are encouraged. 

Free for Members ($10 for nonmembers). Register for this event.

Organized in conjunction with the exhibition Modern Movements, Tim Brown will share his personal perspectives on select works in the exhibition and invite program participants to share their point of view about works of art that speak to them.

A Conversation with Adriana Ospina and Dr. Katie Larson

Organized in collaboration with the Art Museum of the Americas, Hillyer will host a conversation with Adriana Ospina, Director of the Art Museum of the Americas, and Dr. Katie Larson, Vice President of International Arts and Artists (IA&A). Both speakers will discuss topics related to the special exhibition Modern Movements: Selections of Latin American and Caribbean Art from Art Museum of the Americas.

Reflections on Gleaners
Thursday, April 16, 7 to 8 pm

The featured artist talk explores the current Gleaners exhibition through the lens of the Otis Street Arts Project artists. Curator and artist David Mordini and artists Chris Combs and Ceci Cole McInturff will discuss how their collaborative process of sharing found materials and “discarded fragments.”

Vika Gallery will feature “Masks Off: Collage & Transformation,” a hands-on workshop led by Ram Brisueño will explore the expressive power of collage and the role of transformation in artistic practice.

 

Conversation with Natasha Sachdeva

For our “Third Thursday” program, Natasha Sachdeva will have a conversation with her Gallerist, Tariq Allana, to talk about the work in her exhibition “Will this entanglement ever resolve?” Sachdeva’s exhibition challenges conventional ideals of beauty and grace, while dismantling ingrained expectations of restraint, decorum, and conformity. Printmaking Workshop

Printmaking Workshop
Instructor: Calliandra Hermanson

Solo artist, Calliandra Marian Hermanson, will lead a relief printmaking workshop inspired by her exhibition of permutations and patterns. Hermanson’s exhibition navigates the boundaries between plant and human forms, and explores how science and art can be beautifully synthesized.

Create Your Own Art

In partnership with the Foundation for Art and Preservation in Embassies (FAPE), Hillyer will feature a fund hands-on art making activity inspired by works of art in our current exhibition titled GIFT FOR THE NATION 250. Visitors can also participate in a scavenger hunt or visit Bloomberg Connects via a QR code to learn more about the works of art on view.

The program is also organized in partnership with our “Third Thursday” partners, The Phillips Collection, Studio Gallery, Washington Studio School, Heinrich House, ADA Art Gallery, and the Korean Cultural Center. Visit the other venues for details about events and hours of operation.

Majlis and Conversation with Laila Abdul-Had Jadallah

Curator Laila Abdul-Had Jadallah will facilitate a cultural majlis and conversation with a selection of artists who are featured in the exhibition titled Traces ( آثار ). Building on the Arabic meaning of the title, the speakers will talk about how their West Asian and North African roots inform their artistic practices in various ways, and about the historical ties of artists with connections to the region in Washington, D.C.
