Re-Inhabiting Conservation: Our Shared Skies reconsiders the role of artists in wildlife conservation and explores the possibilities of art informed by science. The exhibit features work by over two dozen artists and writers from six countries. With a focus on creatures of flight, each artwork explores a different aspect of the complexity of wildlife conservation. Some artworks draw attention to the tension between wildlife and the human-built environment, while others point to a hopeful future in which we all become part of the solution. Collectively, these works urge us to actively commit to caring for the animals, habitats, and natural resources around us.
Re-Inhabiting Conservation is curated by Creature Conserve, a global nonprofit outreach organization based in Rhode Island, USA, that brings artists, scientists, writers and other creatives together for wildlife conservation. Creature Conserve’s curators include Heather McMordie, Director of Curatorial Programs and Marissa Mireles Hinds, 2026 Curatorial Fellow.

Focusing on flighted creatures around us—the birds, insects, and even mammals in our skies—the artworks in Re-Inhabiting Conservation: Our Shared Skies portray current challenges and hopeful futures for wildlife conservation.
The exhibition draws its name, “re-inhabiting”, from the Bioregionalism movement of the 1930s, and is a call to restore wildlife to native habitats and rethink our relationship to geographic boundaries. It is also a call to rethink boundaries between art and science, and occupy a space that spans the two.
For some artists, such as Christopher Brinkman whose photographs capture raw moments in wildlife rehabilitation, their practices literally link the two fields. Others turn the sober reality of threatened wildlife into stunning visual works. Alexa Brooks’ pair of graphite drawings, for example, turns a landscape of wind turbines—structures deadly to birds and bats—into a delicate lace-like scene.
Collectively, the artworks celebrate the role of flighted creatures in our ecosystems and present a lens for understanding our role in their conservation.

Creature Conserve is a 501(c)(3) global nonprofit outreach organization based in Rhode Island, USA, that brings artists, scientists, writers and other creatives together for wildlife conservationTheir foundational belief is that the arts, informed, inspired, and prompted by science, have the power to direct our attention to the ongoing loss of species and what we can do about it.Their strategy is to encourage art-sci collaboration by creating a supportive, welcoming space where program participants can learn about threats to wildlife, share empathy for animals, exchange ideas, and find opportunities for growth. Their programs include curatorial programs, media outreach, mentorship, scholarships and fellowships, and workshops. Creature Conserve envisions a future in which humans live in balance with the needs of wild animals and our shared environment.
