This exhibition presents a sustained inquiry into the fluidity of identity within a globalized era through the work of Sunanda Khajuria. Living between India and China, Khajuria explores the psychological dimensions of cultural displacement and the ways in which belonging is negotiated across distinct national, linguistic, and aesthetic spheres. Through figurative symbolism, her work maps the emotional terrain of migration, examining the tensions between preservation and transformation—what is carried forward, what is relinquished, and what emerges in the spaces between homes.

By synthesizing South Asian narrative traditions with contemporary transnational aesthetics, Khajuria challenges fixed notions of origin, nationhood, and cultural authenticity. Hybridity functions not merely as a consequence of movement, but as a deliberate methodology through which new forms of visual knowledge are produced. Identity is presented not as a stable destination, but as an evolving process of becoming, shaped through cultural intersection, memory, and material exchange.

The exhibition brings together works in acrylic on linen, natural pigment and Chinese ink on silk, and ink-and-color drawings presented within traditional Chinese book forms. Across these diverse media, Khajuria constructs a visual language that reflects the complexities of migration, belonging, and cultural transformation in an increasingly interconnected world.

Sunanda Khajuria is an Indian artist, researcher, and academic currently serving as Assistant Professor at Wuhan University of Technology, China. She earned her Ph.D. from Wuhan University of Technology, an MFA in Painting from the College of Art, New Delhi, and a BFA in Painting from the Institute of Music and Fine Art, University of Jammu, Jammu. She also completed an Advanced Research Program at the China Academy of Art, Hangzhou.

Khajuria has received several honors including the Visiting Artist Fellowship awarded by the Lakshmi Mittal and Family South Asia Institute’s (Harvard University, Cambridge, USA). A scholar-practitioner, Khajuria has published in high-impact journals while maintaining an active artistic practice. Her work has been exhibited at the NADA Miami (USA), India Art Fair (New Delhi, India), Geumgang Nature Art Biennale (South Korea) and the Art Biennale Bitola (North Macedonia), and is held in private and public collections worldwide.

I am a contemporary visual artist and researcher currently living and working between India and China. My multifaceted practice explores themes of gender equality, femininity, human relationships, psychological landscapes, transformation, and collective memory. Through my works, I interrogate the nuanced realities of identity, belonging, and invisibility—particularly as they relate to women and marginalized communities. Recently, my practice has expanded to include the emotional and psychological dimensions of displacement, immigration, and the lived memories and traumas of immigrants. These themes emerge from both my personal experience and critical observation, forming a rich foundation for my visual storytelling. I use anonymous figures, fragmented forms, and layered symbolism to reflect the silent resilience of those who navigate between cultures, often carrying the invisible weight of longing, loss, and survival. My practice seamlessly integrates traditional and contemporary approaches, combining techniques such as drawing, painting, photography, and printmaking with Chinese ink wash traditions.
