From Here To There: Immigration In Ibero-America

From Here to There, Immigration in Ibero-America is a mirror where people look at their own history, explain their destiny and recompose their identity. Each of these images shows the transformations of a society that evolves from the arrival of new cultures and customs. Perhaps the best face of immigration, allows growth, integration and the idea of a peaceful world capable of accepting others without resentment, bitterness, or distrust. In this diversity of spaces and sensibilities that is Ibero-America, photography becomes a testimony of the essential.

The Ibero-American Cultural Attaches Association is a Washington, DC, based 501 (C) 3 organization that seeks to contribute in the dissemination and preservation of Ibero-American heritage and culture, past and present, to the public in the DC area.

The Arctic Smiles Now

“In the autumn of 2015 I traveled to the arctic, to the scenes of airships and sledging parties, ice floes and glaciers. In the past men came there to push back the shade of Terra Incognita from the maps of mankind and they stayed there as ghosts, as myths. My father read to me as I grew up, crashing onto my bed and using my stuffed animals as makeshift pillows. Together we read their stories, the heroes who braved the ice and snow, the men who died frozen and cold. But when I arrived to the top of our planet what I found was not glittering expanses of ice and blue melt ponds, the strong feel of the men of legend; instead I found tundra, green and gold in the low autumn sun, black brown rock from ancient tropical oceans and women with rifles. I want to show these women at work, show the northern ecosystem they protect and work within and, combining it with the threads I began weaving in my graduate thesis, bring the present arctic into conversation with the past expeditions there.”

Katherine Akey is an artist based in Washington, DC. She uses a wide variety of film formats and photographic techniques to address adventure, the human spirit and the turn of the century and its many cultural upheavals. She graduated from the International Center of Photography at Bard’s MFA program in 2014 after completing her BA in Psycholinguistics at NYU in 2011. Her work has been exhibited across the United States and was recently a participant in the Arctic Circle Residency, Autumn 2015.

Land That We Love

Land That We Love is a collection of photos highlighting Foster’s stay in the recently Ebola stricken country of Sierra Leone. Lloyd Kofi Foster (b.1990) is a Ghanaian-American photographer based in Washington, DC.  Self-taught, Foster’s work uses personal connections, memories, and authentic perception to capture daily life, combat warped media perspectives, and to better understand his subjects. Foster’s work has been published both nationally and internationally.  His work often includes individuals met throughout his daily routine and day-to-day activities. In doing so, he aims to capture the essence of ordinary people.

Infinite Worlds

As an avid explorer, outdoor enthusiast and visual artist, Chiou has always been struck by the complexity of the natural world. Every time she is outside exploring a new park or trail, she appreciates the sense that there is something out there much larger than ourselves, that the world existed long before we came to be. Being immersed in the landscape evokes so many emotions; She feels a great sense of awe and excitement contemplating how much of the world she has yet to discover and explore. Chiou states that the natural world is also her refuge and a place of reflection, evoking a great sense of
peace and tranquility.

The images, shapes, and colors in Chiou’s work are greatly inspired by various flora and fauna, wildlife and natural phenomena she has come across, whether she is at a botanical garden or hiking at a national park. Most recently, she aims to share memories of and experiences in the natural world that have defined her artistically and personally. Many of her pieces are specifically shaped by her recent travels to the American Southwest at national parks such as Bryce, Zion and Joshua Tree. She was particularly intrigued by the subtlety and quiet beauty of the desert landscape. The fact that it’s simultaneously barren yet abundant makes it so magical and mysterious.

Alexandra Chiou is a visual artist and avid explorer inspired by the natural world and the linkages we share with our surrounding environment. In her most recent works, she explores infinite worlds—both real and imagined, conceptual and physical. She draws from the quiet beauty of the desert and looks inward to examine the dualities of the human experience.

She graduated from the University of Virginia in 2011 where she studied Studio Art and Commerce. Her work has been exhibited in a number of galleries across Virginia, Maryland, and Washington, DC including Hillyer Art Space, the Mansion at Strathmore, Adah Rose Gallery and Anacostia Arts Center. Her work has also been featured in The Washingtonian and the CBS 6 Virginia This Morning show. Alex previously served as a Fine Artist-in-Residence at the Strathmore in Bethesda, MD in 2015 and recently completed a summer residency at Otis College of Art & Design in Los Angeles, CA.
