Jazz and Spoken Word

Organized in conjunction with fall jazz and in coordination with the exhibition GIFT FOR THE NATION 250, Kenneth Carroll will present poetry and music inspired by America’s original art form-jazz. Drawing inspiration from the parallel developments in American art (social realism, abstract expressionism, pop art, conceptual art) and jazz (swing, bebop, hard pop and fusion), poets, Kenneth Carroll, Brian Gilmore, Laini Mataka, Sasa Aakil, along with Emory Diggs, Bass, and Charles Carlton, guitar, will perform jazz and poetry that reflect a broader understanding of modern and contemporary Art in American society.

Join us for the return of the fall jazz series featuring the Amy K. Bormet Trio. This program is presented alongside three exhibitions that celebrate the vision and creativity of women artists and curators across the DMV. Fall Jazz is sponsored by the Mars Foundation.

Kweku Sumbry

Saturday, November 23, 2024, 1-3 p.m.

Join us for our last jazz performance in the fall as we featured jazz drummer Kweku Sumbry. Kweku Sumbry is a drummer, percussionist, sound healer and composer from Washington, D.C with deep roots in the world of West African drumming. This performance will take place in the main gallery featuring the ongoing exhibition “Collecting Community: Millennium Arts Salon at 25.”

 

Elijah Cole

As part of our fall jazz series, Hillyer is excited to feature Elijah Cole. Elijah is a guitarist, pianist, and composer who began his career in the Washington DC area, under the mentorship of DC icons Paul Carr and Michael Bowie, and is currently based in Philadelphia.

 

Elijah Easton

Kicking off its fall jazz series, Hillyer is excited to feature the Elijah Easton trio. Elijah Easton is a powerful young saxophone player who will be joined by Darius Mateen on bass and Dana Hawkins on drums.
