Rita Elsner’s breathtaking and grand chalk pastel landscapes take on a surprisingly personal form. The texturized surface of “Overlook” is entirely made up of reclaimed paper bags and “Transfer” depicts an old subway token carving tracks into the snow. Come see both works in our current exhibition, on view until October 31!

Though Cushing has no formal training in art, his paintings explore the depth of space, and the interactions between a figure and the space it inhabits. “Cara” is a portrait of his sister who visited the artist at home over the winter last year. There is a tension between his familiarity with her, his knowledge of the space which she and he inhabit, and the idea of individual separation; no matter how close he is with her, there is always a fundamental distinction between him and her, which is exaggerated by the use of her as a painting subject.

Jackie Brown deals with issues of growth, bioengineering, and the interaction between humans and other organisms: “An important undercurrent in the work is an interest in the human manipulation of living systems”. Brown’s “Strata” is an interesting instantiation of the relation which artists have with their own artwork, mimicking natural ideas of symbiosis and parasitism.
