An Artist Talk with Oluwatoyin Tella

Saturday, January, 20, 2 p.m.

Hillyer’s featured solo artist, Oluwatoyin Tella, will lead a gallery discussion about her solo exhibition titled Expansion of Oyo. In her exhibition, Oluwatoyin explores the continuous thread between pre-colonial African aesthetic and contemporary Black aesthetic.

The Inner Loop Responds to Renèe Stout’s “The Oracle Said, ‘Be Still’.”

Thursday, October 26, 6 – 8 p.m.

Join us for this special ekphrastic event, as nine writers from The Inner Loop community recite poetry and prose in response to Renee Stout’s exhibition “The Oracle Said, ‘Be Still'” at IA&A Hillyer. You don’t want to miss this culminating event that celebrates the interconnection between visual art, the written word, and oral expression.

Past Programs

A Conversation with Amber Robles-Gordon and George Hemphill

featuring George Hemphill

May 20, 2 p.m.

On Saturday, May 20, at 2 p.m.  join us for a conversation with Amber Robles-Gordon, a featured solo artist during the month of May, and George Hemphill, renowned gallerist in Washington DC. Robles-Gordon and Hemphill will be discussing the underpinnings of her current body of artwork, the connective threads to the Washington Color School, and an undiminished love and appreciation of the artwork of Alma Thomas.

This program is organized in conjunction with Robles-Gordon’s exhibition Remnants: a visual journey of memory and renewal, which will be on view through Sunday, May 28, 2023. The program is free to the public. Advanced registrations are welcomed. Register today.

 

An Artist Talk by Zhenya Parish

May 27, 2 p.m.

During the last Saturday in May, Zhenya Parish will lead a gallery talk about her featured exhibition The Art of Letting Go. Visitors will learn about Parish’s unique approach to painting and the role of the audience in the creation of her artworks.

 

Artist Talk with Yu-Jung CHEN

Saturday, April 22, 2023, 2 p.m.

Yu-Jung CHEN will lead a gallery discussion of his current exhibition, “Dynamic Loop-Modulating Algorithm. Yu-Jung will discuss his concept of “superposition” when exploring visible and invisible images in the natural world.

Wine and refreshments will be served. Masks are recommended but not required. This program is free to the public.

Storytelling through Embroidery: Talk and workshop with artist Yasmine Dabbous

Saturday, February 11, 1 p.m.

The Hillyer Gallery is happy to invite you to a talk and workshop with Lebanese visual culture artist Yasmine Dabbous.
During this activity, the artist will speak about her journey from journalism to the arts and will discuss her storytelling approach to embroidery. In the second part of this activity, Dabbous will guide participants as they engage in stitching their own stories.

Artist Talk with Lee Nowell-Wilson

Lee Nowell-Wilson, a featured solo artist, will lead a gallery talk about her exhibition titled “House Under the Table? Her exhibition explores the relationship between the commonplace and the divine in the arena of one’s soul.

This program is organized in conjunction with Dupont Circle’s monthly art walk.

 

Artist Talk with Elsabe Dixon
The Spotted Lanternfly: Art Practice as Lifecycle Disruptor

Saturday, January 28, 1 p.m.

Elsabe Dixon will address the Spotted Lanternfly as an invasive insect, its devastating effect on local agriculture, and how to catch and harvest the Lantenfly in art work.

Pulse 2023: A Panel Discussion with Members of Hillyer’s Advisory Committee

Third Thursday, January 19, 6:30 p.m.

Organized in conjunction with the exhibition Pulse 2023, Hillyer presents a panel discussion with advisory committee members, Joan Belmar, Amber Robles-Gordon, Laurel Lukaszewski, Cory Oberndorfer, John Paradiso, Pat Goslee, and Jarvis DuBois, who will facilitate the discussion. The members will share their thoughts about the contemporary art scene and the important role that Hillyer plays in supporting emerging and accomplished artists in the region and beyond.

On the First Friday in December, visitors will have a rare opportunity to meet in person one of our featured artists, Muriel Hasbun. Hasbun will lead a gallery discussion of her recent series si je meurs / if I die. This talk is FREE to the public.

Third Thursday, December 15, 6:30 p.m.

On the Third Thursday in November, art walk participants will have a rare opportunity to meet in person one of our featured artists, Julio Valdez. Valdez will lead a gallery discussion of his recent works, including his pandemic self-portraits. This talk is FREE to the public.
